ph_simpleblog_10 Surgical Sutures Types
Suturing is the final step of surgery. Properly performed wound closure is essential for the successful outcome of an operation.Suturing is used to reapproximate the tissue until the wound has healed sufficiently to prevent reopening. This important function allows healing by primary intention, promotes hemostasis, significantly decreases chances of postoperative infection, prevents unnecessary bone resorption.

It is of crucial importance to select the appropriate type and size of suture for a specific situation. A variety of surgical threads have been developed. Suture materials are classified based on the origin (natural or synthetic), their biological behaviour (resorbable or non-resorbable), their structure (monofilament or multifilament). Sutures are also classified by numbers from 1 to 10; higher numbers indicate thinner, more delicate thread.

Nonresorbable sutures are produced from either natural or synthetic materials, most popular being silk and then nylon. Resorbable sutures are also fabricated from either biological or synthetic materials.

The catgut is a natural resorbable suture. Plain catgut easily absorbs in the oral cavity within a week, while chromic gut has a prolonged resorption rate. Synthetic resorbable threads are also available. These are materials that are long chains of polymers braided into suture material, e.g. PGA, a biodegradable, thermoplastic polymer. Depending on the origin of the sutures, 2 different resorption mechanisms occur. Natural resorbable threads(e.g. plain and chromic gut) are gradually digested by enzymes in the tissue, while synthetic resorbable sutures (e.g. PGA) are hydrolyzed via the Kreb's cycle.

DSI offers a range of surgical suture materials to accommodate any need of the surgeon in their practice and facilitate the optimal healing process:

DSI Silk Sutures

silk-blog Surgical Sutures TypesDSI Silk are natural non-absorbable surgical sutures, braided from an organic protein called fibroin.
DSI Silk Sutures exhibit consistently superb performance.
Among the most valuable qualities of silk is its exceptional ease of handling. In addition, DSI Silk Sutures possess excellent tenacity and high knot strength, which are critical for secure and successful suturing.
Silicone coating enhances smoothness and reduces fraying thus minimizing trauma as the sutures pass through tissue.
DSI Silk Sutures are dyed black for improved visibility during surgical procedures.
DSI Silk Sutures come with a sharp, strong reverse-cut needle for atraumatic tissue penetration.

Features:

• A variety of sizes available (2-0, 3-0, 4-0, 5-0)
• Non-absorbable
• Exceptional ease of handling
• Excellent tensile strength
• Optimal knot security
• Smooth passing through tissue
• Minimum trauma
• Silicone covered
• Dyed black for improved visibility
• Supplied sterile in individual packaging with needle pre-attached.

DSI Nylon Sutures

nylon-blog Surgical Sutures TypesDSI Nylon are non-absorbable sterile monofilament sutures. Their remarkable physical characteristics and unbeatable quality make DSI Nylon Sutures the ideal material in many surgical cases.
DSI Nylon Sutures are smooth and pliable, easy to handle and show excellent tensile strength even in infected areas. DSI Nylon Sutures simply glide through the tissue causing minimum trauma.
DSI Nylon Sutures provide optimal knot security.
Being infection resistant, as shown by multiple studies, DSI Nylon Sutures provide a safer experience for the patients.
For improved visibility in the wound, DSI Nylon Sutures are available in blue colour.
DSI Silk Sutures come with a sharp, strong needle for atraumatic tissue penetration.

Features:

• A variety of sizes available (2-0, 3-0, 4-0, 5-0)
• Non-absorbable
• Fully synthetic - no inflammatory reaction
• Easy of handling
• Excellent tensile strength
• Secure knots
• Smooth passing through tissue
• Minimum trauma
• Dyed blue for enhanced visibility
• Supplied sterile in individual packaging with needle pre-attached.
• Cost-effective

DSI Catgut Sutures

catgut-blog Surgical Sutures TypesDSI Catgut are natural absorbable sutures produced from highly purified collagen. The materials used come from animals that are bred in rigorously controlled and carefully protected environments.
To prolong the absorption time and thus support for the wound, DSI Chromic Gut Sutures are treated with chromium salt solution.
DSI Catgut Sutures exhibit excellent tensile strength and outstanding performance within the tissue.
DSI Catgut Sutures feature a smooth surface that ensures the thread passes through the tissue easily, thus minimizing the trauma. In addition, it provides superb knot security.
DSI Catgut Sutures are absorbed very quickly by enzymatic hydrolysis. DSI Plain Catgut Sutures lose their tensile strength in 7-14 days and are absorbed in 50-60 days.

Whereas DSI Chromic Gut sutures lose their tensile strength in 14-21 days and are absorbed in 60-90 days.
DSI Catgut Sutures are sterilized by gamma radiation and packed inside conditioning solution.
DSI Catgut Sutures come with a sharp, strong needle for enhanced efficacy. Features: • A variety of sizes available (2-0, 3-0, 4-0, 5-0)
Chromic Sutures are additionally treated with chromium salt solution
• Naturally absorbable
• Highly purified natural collagen
• Excellent tensile strength
• Secure knots
• Smooth passing through tissue
• Minimum trauma
• Strong needle with a fine cutting edge
• Supplied sterilized by gamma radiation in individual packaging with needle pre-attached.
• Packed in solution sachet for optimal moisture level

DSI PGA Sutures

pga-blog Surgical Sutures TypesDSI PGA is a material of a premium quality that delivers consistently high performance.
DSI PGA Sutures are absorbable braided synthetic sutures, specially coated with polycaprolactone and calcium stearate. DSI PGA Sutures allow smooth gliding through tissue.
The remarkable qualities of the material are what makes it the preferred suture for a variety of applications.
DSI PGA Sutures are inert, nonantigenic, and non-pyrogenic. The sutures elicit no immunological response and very low tissue reaction.
Among other beneficial characteristics are high tensile strength during the healing period and excellent knot security.
DSI PGA Sutures exhibit predictable absorption time. They are reliable and easy to handle.

Features:

• A variety of sizes available (2-0, 3-0, 4-0, 5-0)
• Coated with polycaprolactone and calcium stearate
• Absorbable
• Predictable absorption by hydrolysis
• Minimal tissue reaction
• Ease of handling
• Outstanding tensile strength
• Secure knots
• Smooth passing through tissue
• Minimum trauma
• Strong needle with a fine cutting edge
• Sterile
