DSI Sutures
When it comes to the repair or closure of wounds of the skin, sutures (or stitching), the use of skin closure tapes, surgical staples, and adhesives agents are the most renowned methods. Sutures, however, has gained much prominence with most surgeons and other medical health personnel because, apart from being the most common method, they can be used to close any wound, whether internally or externally.
Types of Sutures
There are two general categorizations in which sutures are classified, absorbable and non-absorbable. Sutures can also be classified as monofilament or multifilament. A suture is said to be monofilament when it is made of a single strand and multifilament when it is made of multiple fibres woven together.
Absorbable sutures these are suture made from materials that are capable of providing support to the wound until it heals well to accommodate normal stress, before breaking down. Such materials could be natural or synthetic polymers. These types of sutures make internal stitching of wound a possibility. The absorption of the natural polymer sutures occurs through enzymatic degradation, while that of the synthetic suture occur through a hydrolysis process. Some of our absorbable sutures include: DSI Plain Catgut suture, DSI Chromic Catgut suture
Non-absorbable sutures these are made from either natural or synthetic materials such as silk and polypropylene respectively. They are mainly used for external closure and where the desire is for a permanent implant. Among some of our non-absorbable sutures include DSI Nylon Monofilament, DSI Silk Braided Sutures.
At DSI, our team of experts is continually researching and developing the sutures that help surgeons to repair smoothly or close lacerations, with as minimal as possible scar left behind, so we produce quality sutures that many surgeons have come to trust and associate with superior quality. Find below some of our sutures in details:
DSI Nylon Monofilament
From its name, this suture tells you that it is made from a synthetic polymer material. It is renowned for its memory and, that is the ability to return to its previous shape even after deformation, proclivity for knot slippage. Its 100% synthetic origin means that DSI Nylon Monofilament will cause a minimal reaction to the body.
DSI Nylon Monofilament is a no- absorbable suture and is made of materials which are not metabolized by the body, and are used therefore either on skin wound closure, where the sutures can be removed after a few weeks or in some inner tissues in which absorbable sutures are not adequate. This is the case, for example, in the heart and in blood vessels, whose rhythmic movement requires a suture which stays longer than three weeks and does not lose the strength to give the wound enough time to heal and close completely. Other organs, like the bladder, contain fluids which make absorbable sutures disappear in only a few days, which would not be ideal because it is too early for the wound to heal.
DSI Nylon Sutures are used in dentistry for any surgical procedures due to the strength of its quality and the high demand it commands in the market, among dentistry surgeons. Also can be used in veterinary, and have a high effectiveness with every kind of animals.
Distinctive Characteristics of DSI Nylon Sutures:
• Easy passage through tissues due to its low frictional coefficient.
• Minimal tissue reactivity.
• Excellent elasticity.
• Exceptional for skin closures.
• Flexible, easy to handle and tie - Smooth passage through tissue
• Excellent histocompatibility
The smoothness of monofilament nylon sutures gives the advantage of being easily removed from the tissue. The blue colour of Nylon provides great visibility compared to other nylon sutures - it's easier to see for knot placement and removal in areas of dense natural hair where a black suture is less visible.
DSI Silk Braided Sutures
This is a non-absorbable, sterile, non-mutagenic surgical suture that is made from natural proteinaceous silk fibres known as fibroin. It is braided and coated uniformly with silicone mixture to reduce capillarity and to increase surface lubricity, thereby enhancing its handling characteristics, ease of passage through tissue, and run-down knot properties. The unique manufacturing process, from braiding to coating, gives the DSI Silk Braided Sutures superior softness and compliance for maximum surgical handling. The proprietary coating process provides smooth flow through tissue while maintaining optimal knot security.
DSI Silk Braided Sutures is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation or ligation, including use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic, and neurological procedures. One of its main advantages lies in the fact that DSI Silk Braided Sutures are made non-capillary to withstand the action of body fluids and moisture.
DSI Silk Braided Sutures are ideal for use in skin wound closure, or after external surgical operations, where the sutures can be removed after a few weeks. It can also be used in veterinary with great effectiveness, making it very popular among veterinarians across the world.
DSI Silk Braided Sutures are used in dentistry for any surgical procedures; thanks to its strength and its command of high demand in the market, among dentistry surgeons.
Distinctive Characteristics of DSI Silk Sutures:
• Great strength, tension maintained over the time
• Minimal tissue reactivity.
• Exceptional for skin closures.
• Flexible, easy to handle and tie
• Excellent histocompatibility
DSI Plain Catgut Suture
This is an absorbable multifilament suture made from purified collagen, taken from bovine intestines and treated with glycerol solution.
The absorption of the DSI Plain Catgut takes between 50 to 70 days, and the full tensile strength remains for two weeks. This makes DSI Plain Catgut suture a good choice in rapidly healing tissues as well as internal structures that cannot be re-access for suture removal.
DSI Plain Catgut sutures were developed specially for dental purposes and absorbed within a period that perfectly aligns with the healing time after surgical procedures. It has a high knot-pull tensile strength and a good knot security, owing to its excellent handling features.
DSI Plain Catgut sutures are used in skin wounds closure, or after surgical operations on an external part of the body, where the sutures can be removed after a few weeks. It also has found widespread use in veterinary and has shown a high effectiveness.
DSI Chromic Catgut Suture
This is an absorbable suture made by twisting strands of purified collagen taken from bovine intestines with uniform chromic coating finishing process.
DSI Chromic Catgut sutures are used in skin wounds closure, or after surgical operations on an external part of the body, where the sutures can be removed after a few weeks. Also, DSI Chromic Catgut suture can be used in veterinary, where it has shown a great effectiveness.
DSI Chromic Catgut sutures are used in dentistry for any kind of surgical procedures, thanks to its strength and commanding a high demand on the market, among dentistry surgeons.
DSI Polyglycolic Acid (PGA) Suture
This is an absorbable braided synthetic homopolymer of glycolic acid. It is made of polyglycolic coated with polycaprolactone and calcium stearate.
DSI Polyglycolic Acid (PGA) Suture is absorbed by hydrolysis and elicits less inflammatory response owing to it not being a naturally occurring organic substance.
DSI Polyglycolic Acid (PGA) Sutures possess great tensile strength and an excellent knot security. 85% of the initial tensile strength remains with polyglycolic acid suture two weeks after implantation, while absorption by hydrolysis takes between 60 to 90 days.
Synthetic suture means that this suture is perfectly compatible with every patient and will not provoke any negative body reactions.
DSI PGA sutures demonstrate its best in dental implantology, thanks to the whole specter of its nature. In two phases surgical implantation procedure the best results could be achieved with the use of PGA sutures, because of predictable absorbing time and tensile strength that reduced gradually, and parallels with tissue healing, and bone regeneration.
Distinctive Characteristics of DSI PGA suture:
• Handling property is very good and knots securely
• Easy passage through tissues due to its low frictional coefficient
• No tissue reactivity, PGA is a synthetic suture
• Excellent elasticity
• Excellent histocompatibility
The strength of these sutures varies according to their size, which can be determined by their uniformly applied number. For example, a 4-0 suture is more delicate when compared with a 2-0 suture, but the later has more strength, so it is very important to choose the right one for every procedure.
DSI takes extreme caution in everything it produces to be sterile for the patients, and that is why sutures are certified for "Grade A" sterile standards.
The final stage of sterilization is made with radiology, and the gamma-ray sterilization process takes up to one month and never has to be interrupted. DSI sutures are licensed with CE and ISO. Those licenses are our promise to meet the highest world's standards and have the highest quality material.
