The implant-supported rehabilitation is a predictable and well-established method of edentulism treatment.

Despite the impressive success rate, one of the most common and most troublesome complications is peri-implantitis. If left untreated, it could result in bone loss and implant failure.

The popularity of dental implants also leads to an increasing number of patients affected by peri-implantitis.

Implant gaps and hollow spaces are inevitably laden with microbes originating from the oral cavity that are associated with peri‐implantitis.

To eradicate this major risk to the outcome of implant therapy, DSI has developed a highly efficient solution  - DSI ViruSeal. The antimicrobial gel effectively prevents growth of pathogenic bacteria and eliminates potential bacterial reservoirs.

DSI ViruSeal, based on a viscous silicone matrix, provides a stable and reliable seal, making the colonization and growth of microbes impossible and counteracting re-infection.

The application is quick is and easy, and the gel maintains its beneficial qualities over years, ensuring continuing effect.

DSI ViruSeal greatly contributes to long-lasting success of implant treatment.

A recent study, published in Journal of Dental Implant Research, evaluated the microbial leakage at two different implant abutment interfaces and revealed valuable insights into the striking clinical success of DSI ViruSeal.

The results proved DSI ViruSeal to be effective in controlling microbial leakage at both titanium and zirconia abutments. This material provides a reliable seal and fills the hollow spaces in the implants. The principle of this material is that if the place is already occupied, there will be no nutrition for vital activity of organism to grow and develop.

The purpose of the study was to determine the microbial leakage of 2 different types of organisms (Streptococcus sanguinis, Candida glabrata) in 2 groups of titanium implants (internal hexagon type of connection) with both Titanium and CAD/CAM milled Zirconia abutments. As the dimensions of these organisms are smaller, they can easily pass through the microgap in the implant abutment interface. The 2 groups were divided into two subgroups, one with DSI ViruSeal and the other without.

All the implants were immersed in BHI broth and a poly microbial solution (S. sanguinis and Candida glabrata) was introduced. The results obtained were tabulated and statistically analysed.

On application of DSI ViruSeal both Titanium and Zirconia abutments showed statistically significant difference in microbial leakage when compared to the surface without application of the sealant for both organisms (P<0.05).

The study concluded that DSI ViruSeal demonstrated both antibacterial and antifungal effect, irrespective of the type of abutments used. Findings indicated that application of the sealant was effective in decontaminating the implant–abutment interface and sealing the microgap.

The highly viscous silicone base ensures a reliable sealing of the implant interstitial space and prevents the ingress of organisms. The addition of thymol ensures better antifungal and antibacterial activity. The material did not get dried off, maintaining its viscosity and preventing formation of new microgaps. Thin silicone film effectively prevents adhesion of plaque on the supporting implants.

The study reported that DSI ViruSeal showed statistically significant reduction in peri-implant bacterial and fungal population compared with the interface without the sealing gel.

However, addressing different aspects of implant care is imperative to create a comprehensive barrier against bacteria. Combining the mechanical sealing capabilities of DSI Sil-Flow with the antimicrobial properties of DSI ViruSeal provides enhanced protection, prevents potential infectious risks and maximizes the chances for long-term implant success. The key feature of DSI Sil-Flow is its ability to form a hermetic physical seal.

By integrating both products  into the implant placement and maintenance protocol, dentists can significantly enhance the overall success rates and longevity of dental implants.
